Ok, well, not exactly. But we did solve the mystery of Stinky Pete. I originally posted about this almost an entire month ago, and the, er, trouble had been going on for a little under two weeks at that point. It's been a while, and I'm so relieved, if not a little grossed out, to have figured it out.
The solution reads like this: "The previous renters' cats, down the heating duct, with the urine."
It now makes sense that we didn't smell it until we started running the heater, heating "things" up. We contacted our landlord who reacted in a surprisingly unsurprised manner, and then called the heating and cooling guy who is coming Monday morning to replace that section of ducting. Until then, we have closed #4's vent, and covered it with a huge, folded towel. Larry bought a small space heater so #4 doesn't freeze.
Eew.

Oh, eeewwww! That is just disturbing. This is why I don't like cats. Yuck!
Good luck with that!
I totally second Sher's comment!!
Glad to know you found the source. Reminds me of when my sister who was living in a tin trailer while attending school in Carbondale lost her snake and suspected it crawled between the walls. She could just imagine the stench— especially since this was the summer, but luckily it reappeared. Whew
Well, I'm glad the mystery is solved...and, yeah, ewwwwwwww!
Blessings!
I will say it too, ewwwwww! Cat pee is the worst! Hope you had a happy Thanksgiving.
Ewwwww that smell has got to be gross! So what are you doing? Going without heat until Monday? Yikes! That's a toughy decision...have the smell or freeze? Yikes! Good luck with that one.
oh gross. At least the landlord is having the ducting replaced. Must be a decent landlord at least.
that is so so sad and gross.....I DO have catsand so I think I know more than most, this is very serious. If you don't catch that stuff fresh then watch out, and adding heat to the mix? Ugh.... that is BAD BAD BAD!
Oh yuck, cat pee is so strong and hard to get out too! I wonder where else it will turn up.
Glad you found the problem!I thought I had a problem dealing with it on my planters on my front porch. This is so much worse.
Icky! So glad you solved the stench problem! Actually...is it solved? Do you notice a difference now that the ducts have been cleaned? One job I would never want to have. I'd SO much rather clean up any mess spewed from one of my children than from an animal!
Yes. Problem solved. The section of ducting was replaced, the boot and vent cover sanitized, and it smells like a field of lilies every morning. (Maybe not lilies, but it doesn't smell like pee anymore, and that's all I really care about!)
